Opening of the Research Center for Digital Intelligent Systems at Amirkabir University of Technology
The opening ceremony of the Research Center for Digital Intelligent Systems at Amirkabir University of Technology was attended by Dr. Alireza Rahaei, the acting president of the university, Dr. Mohammad Mehdi Nezhad, the deputy of science, research, and technology at the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Dr. Mohammad Javad Aamiri, the deputy of research and technology, and Dr. Reza Safabakhsh, the head of the Computer Engineering Department.
Three main challenges for university-industry collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence were identified by the head of the artificial intelligence group at Amirkabir University of Technology, including funding, defining the correct needs, and infrastructure. He stated that for the development of research, there is a need for the development of infrastructure.
Dr. Ahmad Nikabadi, speaking at the opening ceremony, mentioned that Iran is ranked around 16th in the world in terms of scientific production in the field of artificial intelligence, but ranks around 70 to 80 globally in its utilization. He continued by stating that they support startup companies in the field of artificial intelligence and they produce good products. However, due to the lack of a good market, these companies dissolve as soon as the support is cut off.
The head of the artificial intelligence group at Amirkabir University of Technology recalled: "We have collaborated with various organizations in the field of artificial intelligence and have also identified the damages. We have announced this and provided solutions, but these problems still exist." Nikabadi emphasized: "Artificial intelligence creates added value in some parts of the world, and the fact that this technology can suddenly create a major transformation in some applications has raised concerns and curiosity. At one point, artificial intelligence was able to defeat the chess champion and later developed intelligent agents that, without any knowledge other than the rules of the game, were able to learn all the techniques that humans had learned over hundreds of years in a short period of time and defeat the chess champion, which also presents a new form of the game." He added that this factor has caused global concern, saying: "Now humanity is faced with the question of what will happen if this experience is repeated in the discovery of drugs or weapons? Another important point is that there are some applications where there is no solution other than entering into artificial intelligence. An example of these applications is the world's financial markets, where the majority of transactions are now carried out using artificial intelligence.
The head of the artificial intelligence group at Amirkabir University of Technology mentioned that controlling some devices is one of the areas where artificial intelligence has taken over, and that when artificial intelligence increases speed and accuracy, the use of human power in such cases becomes meaningless.
Nikabadi pointed out the applications of artificial intelligence in the world, including machine vision. He explained that the analysis of the content of any image captured by a camera can be of interest in this field. He mentioned that the number of active cameras in some countries' urban areas is more than 200 million, providing a very high capacity for urban surveillance.
He also mentioned text, speech, and sound as other areas of artificial intelligence application, stating that this technology can analyze sounds, including common applications such as speaker recognition and speech. Chatbots have gained a lot of popularity in recent years as another product in this field.
Nikabadi also referred to robotics and control as other areas of artificial intelligence application, stating that while self-driving cars are a prominent product in this field, the potential applications of robotics are much greater, primarily due to the high cost of building and maintaining robots.
Overall, he highlighted the wide range of applications of artificial intelligence in various fields and industries.
Nikabadi, referring to the history of the Computer Engineering Department at Amirkabir University of Technology in the field of artificial intelligence, said that the department has had more than 40 graduates in artificial intelligence, with about 24 of them currently serving as faculty members in universities inside and outside the country.
The head of the artificial intelligence group at the Computer Engineering Department of Amirkabir University of Technology mentioned various artificial intelligence projects at the university, including identity determination, handwriting recognition for Persian scripts, activity analysis in videos, image processing in remote sensing, radar images, text and natural language processing, various question-answering systems, and fake news detection. These projects have been implemented at both academic and industrial levels.
He also mentioned smart transportation systems as another project executed at the university and stated that extensive research has been conducted in the field of medical data at the university.
Finally, he identified three main obstacles to implementing industrial projects in the field of artificial intelligence: the lack of proper definition of projects, insufficient allocated funding, and the absence of suitable processing infrastructures in this field. He expressed hope that with sufficient funding, the identification and proper definition of artificial intelligence-related needs, and the development of necessary infrastructures, successful projects could be implemented in this field.
The head of the Computer Engineering Department at Amirkabir University of Technology announced the recruitment of new personnel in the department and stated, "In line with the development of this department, we hope that the groundbreaking for the new building of this department will take place soon.

Dr. Reza Safabakhsh, in the inauguration ceremony of the research center for digital intelligent systems at Amirkabir University of Technology, mentioned that this department separated from the Electrical Engineering Department in 1988 and began to work independently. Undergraduate programs in software, hardware, and information technology have been developed in this department.
He stated that in the master's degree program, specializations in artificial intelligence, software, computer architecture, information security, and computer networks have been defined and are active in the department. Currently, there are about 700 undergraduate students, 320 master's students, and 130 doctoral students studying in this department.
Safabakhsh mentioned that the best students in the field of computer engineering are selected every year and added, "In 1991, we had specializations in software and computer architecture, and we decided to introduce the artificial intelligence specialization, and we developed the artificial intelligence program, which was approved by the Ministry of Science." Additionally, information technology programs were also developed and expanded for the first time in this department.
The head of the Computer Engineering Department at Amirkabir University of Technology considered the launch of the first doctoral program in computer engineering in the country to be related to this department and noted that in 1995, they established the doctoral program and admitted the first students to this program.
He also added: "In 2013, during the review of programs by the Supreme Council of Planning, our department became responsible for the artificial intelligence specialization, and we reviewed the program for this field.
According to him, this year, the responsibility for reviewing the artificial intelligence program has been once again assigned to Amirkabir University of Technology in the review of educational programs and the preparation of the reference program for the fields.
He stated that the development of the information security program has also been entrusted to this department by the Ministry of Science, adding: "The Ministry of Science has launched a working group to determine the strategies for the development of artificial intelligence in higher education, two members of this working group are from the Computer Engineering Department of Amirkabir University of Technology, and one member of the Artificial Intelligence Think Tank of the Academy of Sciences is also a faculty member of the artificial intelligence specialization at this university.
